God Leads

“Remember this day, on which you came out of Egypt, out of the house of slavery, for the LORD brought you out of there with a mighty hand.” (Exodus 13:3)

God had determined to lead His chosen people out of slavery. He called Moses to carry out this mission. He struck Egypt with ten plagues, until at last the people were able to set out toward the land of Canaan. The tenth plague, the death of the firstborn, moved Pharaoh so deeply that he finally let the Israelites go. Moses went before the people who had been released, but it was God who led them. By day, He went before them in a pillar of cloud to guide them on their way, and by night, in a pillar of fire to give them light. God Himself took charge of leading the people He had brought out of the house of slavery.

Yet God desires to lead not only nations but also individuals—you, too. However, He can take control of our lives only when we first break away from the house of bondage, from the power of sin. Our dependence on God requires our independence from the world. For this to happen, the call of our merciful God and the assurance of redemption must become stronger in our lives than the sin that holds us in bondage. God can lead only those lives that have been set free from slavery. Amen.

PRAYER: Almighty Father, I place my life into Your hands. I long for the precious light of Your Word to guide my path. Together with the Apostle Paul, I confess: “It is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me.” Amen.
